Villamartin is one of the most established urbanizations in the region, Villamartin is also one of the most prestigious municipalities and is also known for its world-class golf course, which has contributed to Villamartin's lush and picturesque backdrop for much of the last half century. The Villamartin community consists of several individual urbanizations, including Villacosta, Eagles Nest, Montegolf, Las Filipinas, El Presidente, Los Valencias, El Galan, and Blue Lagoon; all built around a recreational complex with a central plaza and golf course. This area is popular as a holiday destination for both domestic and international tourists all year round. All are attracted by the nearby fine sandy beaches of the Orihuela Costa and the many first-class leisure facilities in the community. One of the few municipalities with its own Wikipedia entry, Villamartin is located approximately 4.0 km inland from the eastern coast of the Mediterranean, in the southernmost district of the province of Alicante and 12 km southwest of the coastal town of Torrevieja. The town borders Los Almendros and La Florida to the east, Los Dolses to the south, Real Club de Golf Campoamor resort to the west and open fields and countryside to the north. Villamartin falls under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Orihuela, and there are two main roads that connect the town to the Mediterranean urbanization of La Zenia and Cabo Roig, providing easy access to the N-332 highway and AP-7 coastal road. The airports of Corvera-Murcia and Alicante-Elche are practically equidistant, each with an international transport hub, reachable in less than one hour. In 1970, construction of the 18-hole championship course began under the watchful eye of Californian golf course architect Robert Dean Putman. The veteran designer, better known as simply Bob Putman, created nine golf courses in the US in the 1960s and was responsible for the layout of the north and south greens of the La Manga Club Resort, a little further south in neighboring Murcia . The Villamartin golf course was opened in 1972 and has a rich history of more than 45 years, on the hallowed greens of the golf course the crème de la crème of golf such as Severiano Ballesteros, José María Olazabal, Ian Woosnan, and Sam Torrance have played. The four-story central plaza opened soon after in 1975, providing the amenities a developing city needed. Villamartin Plaza was extensively modernized and renovated in 2001 and now offers year-round services and amenities for residents and visitors. In 1994 the golf club organized the Mediterranean Open and important competitions are still played here every year. The Villamartin Golf Course, part of the Golf Quara family, is now part of a real estate portfolio together with neighboring Las Ramblas, and La Finca Golf Resort in Algorfa.
