The eponymous white sandy beach Mil Palmeras is the southernmost in a series of six beaches in the Orihuela-Costa district and borders Campoamor beach to the north and Torre De La Horadada beach to the south. It is 346 metres long and 45 metres wide. The beach also has a lifeguard, boardwalks to the beach, showers, a play area and special access for the disabled. The beach has been awarded the Blue Flag.
Mil Palmeras is partly located in the postcode area of Orihuela (03189) and partly in Pilar de la Horadada.
Mil Palmeras has a pleasant maritime climate with an average temperature of 20 °C and 300 sunny days per year. Due to the absence of heavy industry and the presence of the large salinas (salt lakes) in the area, the air in the region is known to be very clean. The area is therefore popular with the elderly and the sick with all kinds of chronic health complaints. It is said that the area promotes health because of the relatively high concentrations of iodine in the air due to the presence of the salinas. In the area there are many clinics for heart and vascular diseases, rheumatism and skin conditions.
North of Mil Palmeras are the Salinas of Torrevieja and La Mata. This is a protected nature reserve, where flamingos can be seen in the wild.
